By the eighties, European fighter manufacturers were beginning to focus on the next generation of fighter aircraft.
American fighters, and the F-16 especially, had come to dominate Western military aviation. If left unchecked, American fighter aircraft would have virtual control of military aviation for years to come. Designing and developing an agile new fighter was essential if European manufacturers were to have any hope of recapturing lost ground in battle for the next generation of fighter aircraft.
The European response was the Eurofighter EF 2000 Typhoon, a twin-engine canard delta powered by twin EJ-200
augmented turbofans. Designed to outperform the Russian Su-27 and all foreseeable future combat threats. The
EF-2000 was strongly influenced by the trend towards agility and maneuverability in the American teen series fighters
and the Russian MiG 29 and Su-27. Although some stealth measures are incorporated into the EF-2000, the Typhoon
is by no means a stealth aircraft.
The EF-2000 has suffered from a protracted political gestation. The UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain initially
agreed to cooperate on developing the Eurofighter to meet their mutual needs, but design, and philosophical differences soon caused France to develop the Dassault Rafale. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Germany
had serious internal doubts about the need for a new fighter aircraft, which caused considerable friction among the
other Eurofighter partners. However, the EF-2000 has survived and is now entering production with the first Operational Conversion Units scheduled to begin in 2003.
